The core is a copper alloy body with a brass ceramic disc cartridge, which is the part that matters and the part you cannot see. Cheaper taps use zinc alloy internals that corrode and seize; this keeps the valve turning smoothly for far longer.
A water-plated chrome finish over that core is the most forgiving surface in a bathroom. It cleans with anything, does not stain, and matches the fittings already in most homes rather than committing you to a colour scheme.

Why does the brass core matter?
Because it is the part that fails. The finish you can see rarely gives out first; the internals do, and brass corrodes far more slowly than the zinc alloy used in cheaper taps.
Will it fit my basin?
It is deck mounted and needs a tap hole of 30 to 35 mm, in a counter up to 1 3/8" (35 mm) thick. Check your basin's hole before ordering — that is what decides fit.
How do I clean chrome without marking it?
Warm water, a soft cloth, and dry it afterwards. Chrome tolerates most cleaners, but scouring pads leave fine scratches that never come out.
